About this page
Choghadiya means "four ghatis", about an hour and a half. Daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts, and so is the night from sunset to the next sunrise. In summer the day choghadiyas are longer than the night ones; in winter it is the other way round. Today in Delhi a day choghadiya is 1 h 28 min long.
Each choghadiya has a ruling planet: Udveg (Sun), Char (Venus), Labh (Mercury), Amrit (Moon), Kaal (Saturn), Shubh (Jupiter) and Rog (Mars). The first one of the day belongs to the weekday’s lord — Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday, Labh on Wednesday, Shubh on Thursday, Char on Friday, Kaal on Saturday — and the rest follow a fixed order.
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are favoured for new work, purchases and travel; Char is fine for travel; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided. Rahu Kaal is checked separately and can fall inside a good choghadiya, so look at both.
