About this page

What a tithi is

A tithi is a lunar day. At Amavasya the Moon and Sun are in the same direction; after that the Moon pulls ahead by about 12° a day. Every 12° completes a tithi: 15 in the waxing (Shukla) half from Pratipada to Purnima, and 15 in the waning (Krishna) half ending at Amavasya. Because the Moon’s speed varies, a tithi can be as short as 19 hours or as long as 26.

How "tithi today" is decided

For vrats and pujas the tithi that counts is the one at sunrise (udaya tithi). Sunrise in Delhi today was at 6:16 AM, when Krishna Dashami was running. A tithi changes at the same instant everywhere in India, but sunrise does not, so two cities can occasionally have a different "tithi today".

Kshaya and vriddhi tithis

When a tithi starts after one sunrise and ends before the next, no day carries it at sunrise: it is kshaya (skipped). When a tithi covers two sunrises, it is vriddhi and two consecutive days share it. Vrat dates in such cases follow each tradition’s rules, which is why we mark these days.
